The late hit from Martellus Bennett on Seattle Seahawks linebacker K.J. Wright last Sunday will cost the Green Bay Packers tight end a little over nine grand.

According to Michael Cohen of PackersNews.com, Bennett was fined $9,115 by the NFL for his defense of quarterback Aaron Rodgers in Week 1:

Bennett came to Rodgers’ aid after a scramble and dive netted the Packers a crucial first down late in Green Bay’s 17-9 win over the Seahawks. He took exception with Wright’s hit on Rodgers and responded accordingly, shoving the Seahawks linebacker to the ground well after the whistle.

Officials penalized Bennett 15 yards for unnecessary roughness.

Here’s the play in question:

Maybe Rodgers can help pay Bennett’s fine. He certainly admired his tight end’s decision.

“It meant a lot to me,” Rodgers said. “Any time your teammates do something like that, it’s special. Those are the moments you take with for a long time. I love Marty for doing that.”

Bennett will be fined $18,231 if he has a second offense for a late hit.

Bennett and the Packers take on the Atlanta Falcons in Week 2.
